Course Overview

Training Programme Overview

To provide quality management training and leadership development to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries’ leaders and managers in the National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs).

Course Objectives

01  

To facilitate the personal and professional development of leaders and managers in the NMCPs across the SADC E8 countries.

02  

To equip course participants with relevant leadership and management skills to fulfill their roles and responsibilities effectively within their NMCPs.

To enhance the leadership, management, decision-making and innovative knowledge and capacity of the participants.

04  

To provide participants and their various associated NMCPs, with the most recent practices and technical training in malaria elimination strategies and management.

To assist in the development of the various NMCP units by establishing a process of cascading key information and cultivating the involvement of all employees in this development initiative.

To create opportunities for networking, information sharing and potential collaboration across the various NMCPs.

Training Programme Structure

Course consist of 3 consecutive modules:
Module 1 Science of leadership and effective management
  • 11 sessions, virtual
  • Effective leadership and management, building competent malaria leaders and managers that can develop and drive effective elimination strategies
Module 2 Evidence based decision-making
  • 4 sessions, virtual
  • Strategic and critical thinking, assessing impact and performance of interventions, generating data for impact, translating research findings into practice, and funding.
Module 3 Science of malaria and malaria elimination
  • 9 sessions, in-person at Future Africa
  • Malaria and elimination knowledge, and introduce technologies and techniques, to assist advancing elimination efforts.
  • Phased learning approach that addresses functional skills and competencies, applied in the practical context of malaria elimination
  • Each participant must develop a system strengthening project (SSP), to demonstrate application of skills learnt

  • Course Integrator to assist with learning transfer.
  • System Strengthening Projects with individual project coaching.
  • Individual Personal Development Coaching.
  • Thornhill 360 Leadership Assessments (Pre & Post assessments for participants).

Phase 1: (2022 and 2023)

  • Funded for 2 years
  • Only E8 countries: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • Hybrid course. 2022 all modules virtual, but in 2023 module 3 in-person
  • Dual language, English and Portuguese in 2023
  • Only targeted leaders and managers from National Malaria Control Programme 

Phase 2: (2024 - 2026)

  • Additional 3 years of funding
  • Looking to include 2 or 3 other SADC countries (Malawi, Madagascar, Comoros)
  • Hybrid, with English and Portuguese in 2024 and 2025
  • Considering to include participants outside the NMCPs
  • Considering including other diseases and not just malaria
  • Start identifying Portuguese and French partners to host the course in those languages from 2028
