Despite significant investment in prevention and treatment of malaria in the past 2 decades, the burden of malaria remains high in Africa with over 95% of fatal cases (600,000+) occurring in the continent and with 80% of those malaria deaths occurring in children under 5 years in Africa. Africa accounted for close to 233 million cases of malaria in 2022.
