Malaria Leadership Life-Long Learning (ML-L3)

Malaria Leadership Life-Long Learning (ML-L3) platform provides a space for alumni of the University of Pretoria Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control’s “Advanced Leadership Programme for the Elimination of Malaria” to engage with their peers, facilitate cross-border communication and collaboration, promote the exchange of vital malaria-related knowledge, and also introduce the general public to the importance and impact of leadership training on the malaria elimination agenda.  

Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region

Despite significant investment in prevention and treatment of malaria in the past 2 decades, the burden of malaria remains high in Africa with over 95% of fatal cases (600,000+) occurring in the continent and with 80% of those malaria deaths occurring in children under 5 years in Africa. Africa accounted for close to 233 million cases of malaria in 2022.

The purpose of leadership training in the malaria space is to  provide leaders and managers of country malaria control Programme and their partners and stakeholders with the necessary leadership skills, management techniques, and decision-making tools to adapt to the ever-changing malaria landscape, inspiring future, passionate leaders. The UP ISMC’s  “Advanced Leadership Programmes for the Elimination of Malaria” aims to build capacity for people leading and managing malaria Programmes so as to increase their analytical and problem-solving skills, enhance leadership abilities as well as the implementation of evidence-based policies and approaches that adapt to shifts in malaria dynamics, to support the transition from malaria control to malaria elimination and ultimately malaria eradication.
